Tendon Pain

Look beyond one painful point.

Persistent tendon pain may involve the tendon, muscle-tendon unit, surrounding tissues, movement, and the way the area is being loaded. Not every tendon condition is appropriate for shockwave.

  • symptom location
  • tendon loading tolerance
  • mobility and muscle function
  • activity and training demands

01 · Assess

Find the treatment target.

Assess symptom location, tendon loading tolerance, mobility, muscle function, and the demands that matter to the patient.

YW Physical Therapy · Step 01

Tendon loading assessment

02 · Region

Treat the broader region.

Radial shockwave may be applied across the broader muscle-tendon region based on examination findings.

Radial shockwave treatment applied across the calf and Achilles tendon region

YW Physical Therapy · Step 02

Radial shockwave · muscle-tendon region

03 · Target

Direct energy with precision.

Focused shockwave may then be directed toward a selected localized tendon treatment site when appropriate.

YW Physical Therapy · Step 03

Focused shockwave · selected tendon site

04 · Recovery

Post-Shockwave Care.

Class IV laser may be applied to the treatment region following shockwave as an adjunct within the session.

Class IV laser · post-shockwave care

05 · System

Address related muscle regions.

Rapid Release or another vibration-based technique may be used for related muscle regions when appropriate.

Rapid Release treatment applied to surrounding calf musculature

YW Physical Therapy · Step 05

Rapid Release · related muscle group

06 · Rebuild

Reload the tendon with purpose.

Selected exercise may be used to reconnect the treatment session with tendon loading, lower-limb control, and a gradual return to meaningful activity.

How it works

Mechanical energy. Clinical context.

Shockwave therapy delivers acoustic mechanical energy into musculoskeletal tissue. The stimulus may influence processes involved in pain modulation, cellular signaling, circulation-related responses, and tissue remodeling.

It is not appropriate for every condition or every patient. Treatment begins with an assessment to determine whether shockwave is appropriate and which tissues or regions should be addressed.

Two technologies · Different roles

Broad when the region matters. Focused when precision matters.

Radial shockwave equipment used at YW Physical Therapy

Radial shockwave · Treat the region

Broader regional treatment.

Radial shockwave distributes mechanical energy across a broader treatment area. It may be considered when surrounding muscle, fascia, or a larger symptomatic region is relevant.

Focused shockwave equipment used at YW Physical Therapy

Focused shockwave · Target the area

More localized targeting.

Focused shockwave allows treatment to be directed toward a more localized and potentially deeper target when the assessment identifies a specific treatment site.

Why YW Physical Therapy

Technology is only part of the treatment.

Devices do not determine where treatment should be applied, which type of shockwave should be used, or what should happen afterward. Clinical reasoning matters.

Clinical fit comes first

Is shockwave right for you?

Selected Achilles, elbow, patellar, rotator cuff, or calcific shoulder presentations may be discussed after a clinical assessment.

Shockwave is not appropriate for every diagnosis. A clinical assessment helps determine whether the treatment matches the presentation.

Questions

Shockwave FAQ

Is shockwave therapy painful?

Treatment can feel strong or uncomfortable depending on the area and sensitivity. Intensity can be adjusted based on tolerance and treatment goals.

What is the difference between radial and focused shockwave?

Radial shockwave distributes energy across a broader region, while focused shockwave can direct energy toward a more localized treatment target. Either or both may be considered depending on the clinical presentation.

Do you always use both radial and focused shockwave?

No. Treatment is individualized. The type of shockwave and treatment sequence depend on the assessment and clinical indication.

What is Post-Shockwave Care?

Post-Shockwave Care is YW Physical Therapy's term for adjunct treatment performed after shockwave. This may include Class IV laser and treatment of related muscular regions when appropriate. It does not imply that this combination is proven superior to shockwave alone.

Is shockwave a replacement for exercise or physical therapy?

No. Progressive loading, exercise, movement, and activity management often remain important parts of rehabilitation. Shockwave may be incorporated as one component of a broader plan.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of visits varies with the condition, symptom duration, examination findings, response to treatment, and rehabilitation needs.

Is shockwave covered by insurance?

Shockwave is self-pay. If your plan includes applicable physical therapy benefits, the required evaluation and other eligible PT services may be covered or reimbursable after your deductible is met. Coverage depends on your individual plan.

Assessment before technology

Find out whether shockwave fits your condition.

Treatment begins with understanding the presentation—not simply applying a device to the painful area.
