Back Pain Physical Therapy in Manhattan

Chronic back pain rarely lives where it appears. Dr. Wu uses a full-body assessment to find the actual mechanical driver, then systematically removes barriers and rebuilds your movement — so results last.

Why Back Pain Keeps Coming Back

The Problem with Standard Back Pain Treatment

Most back pain treatment follows a predictable cycle: rest, anti-inflammatories, heat, some stretches, maybe a cortisone shot. Pain improves temporarily. Then it comes back — often in the same place, sometimes worse.

The reason is that these interventions treat the sensation of pain without addressing the mechanical forces that created it. The back becomes the symptom site for a movement problem that originates elsewhere — often in the hips, thoracic spine, or lower extremities.

80%

of back pain is mechanical

Not structural, not pathological — driven by movement patterns, load distribution, and muscle function.

60%+

of MRI findings are incidental

Imaging often finds abnormalities; present in pain-free adults — not the cause of your pain.

Most

cases respond within 6–10 sessions

When the right driver is identified and the system is treated correctly.

How I Treat It

The Human System Reset™ Approach to Back Pain

REVEAL

Find the True Driver

Full-body movement assessment using AI analysis. I identify which compensation patterns are loading your lumbar spine, and where those patterns originate — hip restriction, thoracic immobility, glute inhibition, or foot mechanics.

RELEASE

Remove the Barriers

TECAR therapy for deep tissue healing, focused shockwave for fascial and muscle tissue, Class IV laser for neural inflammation, and manual therapy to restore joint mobility.

RESTORE

Retrain Movement

Neuromuscular re-education to activate inhibited stabilizers (often the deep multifidus and transverse abdominis), correct load transfer patterns, and restore pain-free movement.

REINFORCE

Build Lasting Resilience

Progressive loading, functional strengthening, and a home program so your spine can tolerate the demands of your life — and you don't need me forever.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How is your approach to back pain different?+

Most back pain treatment targets the painful area and strengthens generically. Dr. Wu begins with a full-body movement assessment to identify the actual mechanical driver — which is often not where the pain is. Only then does treatment begin.

Can you help with herniated disc / sciatica?+

Yes. I commonly treat disc-related pain including radiculopathy (sciatica). Treatment addresses the mechanical load contributing to disc compression, the surrounding muscle dysfunction, and the nerve sensitization that amplifies pain.

I've had back pain for years. Is it too late to get better?+

Chronic back pain (12+ months) is fully treatable in the majority of cases. Chronicity often means the underlying drivers have never been properly identified — which is exactly what the REVEAL phase addresses.

Do I need an MRI before I come in?+

No. MRIs are often overused for back pain — most findings on imaging in adults over 40 are incidental and not causing symptoms. I assess your movement and function, which is far more clinically relevant than structural imaging.

Can I see you if I have insurance?+

I'm an out-of-network provider. Many patients use out-of-network benefits or HSA/FSA. Some plans may be covered through third-party billing — reach out and I'll check. See my Insurance & Pricing page for details.
